BLK IRL {Black In Real Life}
A Virtual Exhibition of Self-Reflection, Resilience, and Communal Beauty
Across generations and throughout the diaspora, people of African lineage have faced erasure, distorted imagery, and limiting stories about who we are. Yet we continue to create our own narratives in our truth: through art, language, style, community, and everyday life.
BLK IRL is a digital exhibition focused on how we see ourselves now, how we hold each other, and how we choose to live in this moment as Black folx worldwide. This call seeks work that affirms Black life today: complex, sacred, joyful, tired, healing, redefining, and thriving.
Themes of interest
• Self-reflection and honest self-portraiture, literal or symbolic
• Personal resilience: adaptation, rest, restart
• Positive self and body image that honors real Black lives
• Communal image: how we uplift and show up for each other
• Presence and groundedness in the current moment
• Everyday Black life: rituals, routines, softness, humor, care
• Healing from internalized racism, colorism, texturism, shame
• Joy, play, imagination as resistance and self-definition
Work may be subtle, loud, abstract, figurative, spiritual, humorous, or intimate, as long as it engages with self-reflection, resilience, positive image, and present realities of Black life.
